Hello, World! Meet two of this year’s Armory Show spinoffs: Volta NY, an invitational art fair that spotlights emerging artists in the heart of Soho and The Art Show presented by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) at the historic Park Avenue Armory.
For us, the best of both fairs was contemporary art that transcended the marketplace: Young DC artist Wilmer Wilson IV‘s durational paper bag performance drew a rapt audience to Conner Smith at Volta, while in ADAA’s posh setting, adoring followers fluttered around Ann Hamilton, the only ‘artist in residence’ we’ve ever seen at an art fair. Everyone waited patiently to participate in her experiment—all eager to be photographed through the milky membrane that Hamilton had suspended inside the Carl Solway Gallery booth.
