9 Dec New York based Torkwase Dyson is a painter using distilled geometric abstraction to explore contemporary theories of space, architecture and extraction economies. Miami-based artist Adler Guerrier engages in a practice centered on notions of place, landscape, and gestural frameworks depicting phenomenological relations. On the Fresh Art International show at Untitled, the artists reflect on why they choose abstraction to represent their perspectives on race, ethnicity, class and culture. A selection of Dyson’s paintings that respond to the more than 4,000 lynchings in the U.S. between 1877 and 1950 are on view in On Documentary Abstraction at ArtCenter/South Florida, Miami Beach, through Dec 17. Following a recent solo exhibition at David Castillo Gallery, Miami, Guerrier participates in the 2017 Ghetto Biennial, Port-au-Prince, Haiti (Nov-Dec 2017) with a film that contemplates the architecture of placemaking in the urban landscape.
