The 2019 Chicago Architectural Biennial tells stories that originate here and connect with global communities, cities, territories and ecologies. Images from the exhibition …and other such stories begin to reveal the worlds of culture, history and politics in the built and natural environment of this metropolis. Stay tuned for our conversations with artists, designers, activists, curators and community builders involved in shaping the Biennial.
From the Biennial Souvenir Book: Sitting at the crossroads of the Great Plains and the Great Lakes, Chicago has been shaped by planetary forces: colonial expansion, mass migration, extraction economies, and rapid industrialization. The city’s urbanism is the product of flows of people, goods, and capital—and the concurrent exploitation of bodies, labor, and nature.
